I've been going to Brodhead Veterinary Medical Center for about three years and I can't say enough good things about it. From the receptionists to the veterinarians everyone is so nice and helpful. They are always willing to listen and help you and your pet the best way possible. My cats normally see Dr Bunting, who is an amazing person that has given my cats the best care. They have also seen Dr Miller, Dr Pakes, and Dr Dahlgren, who are equally wonderful and show how much they care about my cat's well-being. I feel fortunate to have found this clinic and to have peace of mind knowing that my cats are in the best possible hands.
I've been an animal owner for nearly 4 decades and as I watch the prices rise far beyond my reach while the fair Farm Vets retire, I'm forced to reconsider owning animals at all.
I love Dr. Dhemlar from this clinic, he's fair and realistic in his knowledge sharing and he's tried to inform me of my goat care options, but many of the experiences I had with this clinic had been declining, mostly on the cost front, followed by what I viewed as dismissive or disrespectful treatment by some members the staff. I've seen eyes rolled at me, heard conversations held in front of my face but from the corner in whispers about my reactions to limited care and increasingly high bills. I've been hung up on, I've been denied answered calls or hard copies (Katie was just a snob and Kari proved no better)..
I dropped our old dog off for dental work and picked him up ten teeth lighter, which cost us almost a thousand dollars and while we did say take out the worst of them, we weren't given a call to tell us WHICH were the worst and our dog came home in severe pain with uppers that had no lower teeth, lowers that had no uppers, and he wasn't able to chew hard food for the rest of his natural life.
I paid $450 to have my cat examined and x-rayed after he was hit by a car, was told it would cost approx $3000 to fix the dislocated hip and we were sent home with our broken cat.
Our 2 dogs went in for annual exams and it cost $780. The exam, blood work w/ fecal+urine, some bravecto and a 14 day run of antibiotics for a common UTI cost me a MONTHS pay...
Maybe you are seeing higher costs, but from an independent clinic, I never expected to be charged out of pet ownership. As a disabled Veteran on a VERY limited budget, the ransom is growing too high to justify these treatments.
I have a herd of goats and after a few other vets tried to bankrupt me for inaccurate Elisa tests (Amy, Dodgeville, and the other 2 have since retired) I was told caudal fold testing is accurate for ruling out both CL and Johnes (TB in general as both are), but I was forced to register my herd with the USDA to get the results and the subsequent forms of ID for that cost me an additional $400...
I had a 3 buckling kids display malnourishment in spite of quality feed and when I had a liver biopsy done on the 1st one that died, after spending $70 on the multimin that ultimately killed him faster, I waited nearly a month for results that included a vague interpretation as to WHY he was deficient. When the 2nd kid died, I called the Lab in Iowa and they said it's against the LAW to take the liver sample directly from me, that a Vet is the only way I can submit a sample and they're not even legally allowed to give me the bill so the vet can include their markup, and after 2 months of waiting and calling to check, I was told it's $248, FOR ONE SAMPLE!!! (All 3 kids had died by then ).
Having 2 horses teeth floated cost $500 and they had me trailer the horses to them (in 2012 it cost $75/ea and the vet came to the barn, from a different clinic).
I considered closing my account with Brodhead, but they didn't give me the option. This letter was sent to me with all of my records, after I contacted them about doing a remediation to apologize for my behavior in response to theirs. They don't like ME, so they refuse to service ANY of my animals, of which I have more than 40. VERY unprofessional.. I didn't like the prices, but my bills were always paid. They didn't like my personality and now my animals don't have a vet. Now who's behavior is unacceptable?!
The greed of this system is taxing me right of wanting these hardships... I am disheartened by this and don't know how to offer condolences to those of you that are forced to lose the animals you love because of a system that prioritizes profit over ethics, or even performance.
